Death is an irreversible incident that leaves people with prolonged stressful experiences. The demise of a loved one may happen after a natural calamity, chronic disease, suicide, accident, or homicide. Regardless of the cause, the loss of a family member or close friend exposes people to psychological suffering. In their curiosity, many psychoanalysts have since studied the subject to offer assistance to grieving families. Even though their opinions vary, scholars provide valuable insights that help people to cope with loss. Among the conducted studies, Sigmund Freud’s work remains the most convincing and helpful to affected groups. Freud termed mourning as a deviation from normal conditions of life, where affected people retain lost attachments before starting a gradual reconstruction process.
The first sign of mourning is the deviation from the regular activities of life. While everyone continues with the usual chores, bereaved individuals spend their energy thinking about the time they spent with a deceased. Feelings of regrets and inferiority may dominate a mourner’s mind during this period.
