Mental health illnesses are major concerns in the US. The numbers of people suffering from different mental problems including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, dementia and bipolar disorder among others are increasing at an alarming rate. Mental health institutions and psychiatric wards are filled with patients seeking care for their conditions. The US economy is also suffering from the high numbers of individuals being released from the workplace and becoming dependent on government relief and aid. In light of the increasing numbers of mental health patients in the region and globally, critiques have come out strongly to posit that the current epidemic is the product of disease-mongering by not only the psychiatric profession but also big pharma. They share that there is a push to have as many people as possible to be institutionalized and put on medications that are utterly useless. They further add that the psychiatric diagnoses are scientifically worthless in terms of the identification of discrete mental disorders.
