Each day, individuals actively perform their genders, whether knowingly or not, in efforts to prove their identity. Interestingly, people embrace and perform their gender, not from their point of view, but societal expectations; since such practices begin from childhood, peoples' understanding of themselves and each other is structured by appearances and behaviors that a community dictates. As such, gender is present when an individual's performance and in other ways that serve to create, sustain, or challenge gender expectations in a particular setting. In most cases, children are differentiated at birth based on gender; however, gendered expectations arise from such identification, which continues until the end of life. My case is no different; as a woman, societal expectations have significantly influenced how I perform gender such as in what I watch, what I like to do, what I dress, or even how I sit.
