Daydreaming or losing yourself in your thoughts is a form of hypnosis. Whether you believe in hypnosis or not, it is a form of science that has been used for the past one hundred years to treat various medical conditions. Int eh late medieval period, hypnosis was practiced by religious sects, shamans, and healers using non-scientific means. Perhaps due to its spiritual ties, hypnosis was dismissed by the scientific and medical community.
Hypnosis was not accepted in mainstream academia until the late 1800s when two schools were opened to study this phenomenon. The two schools “the school of Nancy” and “the school of Salpetriere” used contrasting approaches to investigate hypnosis. While the school of Nancy investigate hypnosis as a treatment and examined the responses to suggestions, the school of Salpetriere aimed to disprove the application of hypnosis as pathological and only mentally unstable patients would respond to suggestions NOTEREF _Ref39746622 \f \h \* MERGEFORMAT 1.
