Effects of Caffeine on Cognitive Functions
Caffeine is a chemical substance that causes neurobiological changes in the human body (Grades Fixer, 2019). Cognitive function pertains to the intellectual ability to process information or knowledge and to apply it (Buye, 2019). Caffeine can be considered as a neurotoxic drug typically consumed in drinks such as cocoa, tea and coffee whose consumption can either facilitate cognitive performance or cause various health hazards.
Caffeine keeps people conscious and active. It enhances concentration, watchfulness and response time when used in low to moderate doses. For regular users, caffeine can help to maintain focus during challenging tasks and can counteract any drop in performance (Furber, 2018). Various research evidences have proven that caffeine can increase performance in frazzled people. For instance, all those occupations (military, health workers and transporters) where exhaustion is likely, due to restricted or intermittent sleep (Furber, 2018), frequent doses of caffeine can help these individuals retain their physical and cognitive capacities and reduce errors.
Caffeine can strengthen both memory and concentration. Most students hope that along with attention and cognitive function, caffeine will have this impact too (Furber, 2018). Caffeine makes learning simpler in activities where knowledge is passively provided. Coffee can help an individual to concentrate and understand a little bit more about the topic of discussion. The justification that caffeine directly improves learning and memory is rather sparse and contradictory. Any changes in thinking or memory associated with caffeine intake are primarily due to the caffeine making an individual more alert and awake. A person remembers the material better because of being more alert and awake while learning it.
Regular intake of caffeine is correlated with the prevention of neurodegeneration, thus reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. These diseases may not be a priority to many, but it is a little reassuring when it turns out that a much-adored habit has beneficial health impacts.
Caffeine may help to cure headaches. While drawdown of caffeine may result in migraines, caffeine may also be used as a cure particularly when combined with painkillers such as ibuprofen (Furber, 2018). The mode of action is, caffeine restricts the blood vessels that supply the brain. However, those who face increased migraines due to withdrawal from caffeine are usually advised to abstain from it.
High doses of caffeine can cause tension and stress. Caffeine results in an increased ability to experience pleasure at low and moderate doses, while larger doses tend to create fear and unpleasant sensations. Caffeine increases acuity by obstructing a hormone called adenosine that leaves a person feeling tired while simultaneously stimulating the release of adrenaline, which is proven to increase energy. These effects are more robust if the quantity of
