Schizophrenia Featured in the Film A Beautiful Mind
Schizophrenia is an intricate, chronic mental health issue and is perceived as a noteworthy mental dysfunction and is predominant in about 1% of the global population (Cunningham & Peters, 2014). The early onset of the illness, in addition to its chronic nature, render schizophrenia as an incapacitating issue for most patients and their families (Thacker & Hughes, 2013). A Beautiful Mind is a film that was produced in 2001, built on the acclaimed, schizophrenic mathematician, John Forbes Nash Jr., who is depicted by Russel Crowe (Grazer & Howard, 2001). This film depicts a course of events of John Nash's life that commences with his entry to a graduate school at Princeton to study mathematics (Grazer & Howard, 2001). During this phase, the early side effects of schizophrenia manifest, which are prevalent all through his life, for example, when he wins the Nobel Prize (Grazer & Howard, 2001). The narrative of John is excessively phenomenal.
The film is intriguing as it represents an individual who is splendid; yet, has a side which is aphotic and schizophrenic, and hauls his brain to a non-existent domain (Grazer & Howard, 2001; Trotman, Mittal, Tessner & Walker, 2013). By conducting a case study analysis of John Nash, various aspects of the disease such as the aetiology and pathophysiology, mental health assessments, interventions and treatment, impact and the corresponding stigma can be obtained. With this as the purpose, the paper will provide an insight into the deep-rooted battles of somebody with a debilitating illness such as schizophrenia.
