Big sporting events in the world come with the host country launching large infrastructural projects. Stadium and sports villages need to be built within a short period of time after the bid is won from the managing organization. Many countries who win this tickets do not have strong internal leagues for private sector to have stadiums which can host an international events. After getting the ticket, the government has to finance the construction of new stadiums or improvement of the existing ones. Qatar won the ticket to host the 2022 world cup in 2010. This came as a blessing to the Middle East and the Gulf countries since it was the first time for the event to hosted there. However, the happiness was short lived considering Qatar never had a single stadium to host an event of such magnitude. Immediately after winning the ticket, the government embarked in constructing 8 stadiums to host the event.
New structural designs were drawn for the 8 stadia and construction process began immediately. Big infrastructural firms in the Middle East and Europe were at the centre of winning construction contracts. These firms include Besix from Belgium, OHL from Spain, Carillion from the UK, Aktor from Greece and Vinci from France. With a population of approximately 2.5million, a lot of labour for these projects had to be imported outside the country. Migrant workers from other Arab countries and African countries flooded the construction sites and the labour camps in Doha and Lusail cities (Brannagan, & Giulianotti, 2014). However, international media have been claiming that since the World cup construction boom started, there is a lot of violation of migrant workers rights in the construction projects.
Qatar is generally half desert with subtropically and hot desert climate being experienced all the year round. During summer, which runs from June to September, temperatures easily reach 40oC and above. This has led to implementation of various laws to ensure there is the safety of workers in construction sites. One the law is that from 11.30am 3 pm, all the workers are supposed to work indoors during summer time. Protection of workers exploitation was the main priority of the government.
Qatar’s ministry of labour and social affairs (MOLSA) has stepped in and established a set of rules which all the construction companies must comply with. All firms are supposed to pay their workers through a bank account. This will
