Over the years, different people ranging from the high and the mighty to the ordinary citizenry have coined their ideas and beliefs on what makes an individual a patriot. Stephen Decatur asserted that being patriotic involves loving your people ahead of others while Charles De Gaulle articulated that being a patriot consists in having a conviction similar to religion in regards to love for one’s country (Ratcliffe, 2010). The real question is what really makes an individual a patriot. This essay outlines the three main factors that qualify an individual to be a patriot.
