Wrongful Convictions
Introduction
The strength of a criminal justice system depends on its accuracy to clear the innocent and convict the guilty. However, that is not always the case, and wrongful convictions occur. A wrongful conviction means the imprisonment of an innocent person or where procedural errors have violated a person's human rights. Systematic factors cause wrongful convictions in all jurisdictions for various reasons. Typical ones involve the public's demand for accountability of law enforcement officials to conclude high profile cases or other institutional or resource factors. The public officials succumb to pressure and justify bias against an individual or group to show results to the people or superiors. The bias causes investigators to develop evidence with a specific person in mind and ignore or suppress information pointing to another person who may be the guilty party. Identifying the causes of wrongful convictions and providing remedy is essential in maintaining the judicial system's integrity.
