Community change is significant since it brings about transformations in the various aspects of community life. Community change receives different receptions from diverse individuals who don’t always have the same opinion on things. Not all change is acceptable in the community, but that doesn't mean that organizations should stop enacting and advocating for change in the various spheres of their lives.
The world as we know it is going through a lot of ideological transformations and behavioral changes that are being experienced in the various sectors of society. Some say the young and youthful generation is responsible for the abrupt and diverse behavioral change. However, it is still logical to assume that the youth must have learned these things somewhere before trying to practice them in society. Others blame social media platforms and the show business industry for moral decay, but the same can’t be quantified because even people in remote uncivilized areas are changing. “Schools were the only recourse for morals yet they have also become discriminative of gay students." (Garvey et al. 2015)
The point of focus in this paper is the change in matters involving the LGBTQ community. There have been serious debates over the past few years about how to legalize these communities. The question then changed, and the world was asking when it was going to legalize them. The issue is a social issue that touches on various aspects of society, such as morality and ethics, which are salient features in any community.
The topic also raises religious questions on whether it is acceptable by the various religions practiced in America or not. People also feel that these vulnerable community members might not have a place in schools and hospitals since they are considered in between or not normal. The range of issues is endless and will be discussed within the paper.
Changes in the LGBTQ community are rapidly taking place in all American states. Countries outside America have also begun recognizing the need to give legitimacy to this group that so desperately needs protection. Various societies feel that it is time to let LGBTQ live, and this decision is modeled in the right direction. This is because, just like us, the members of the LGBTQ community have the right to express their feelings freely so long as doing so doesn’t infringe anyone else’s right to free expression.
The UN charter on human rights is evident in the enjoyment of rights and liberties, and it considers all persons as equal before the law. Legal provisions are not modeled on morality, and therefore society should deny the LGBTQ community their right to form unions with whoever they want based on moral grounds. "…gay people are vulnerable hence the need to create safe zones for them" (Wood et al. 2016). It is, therefore, necessary to recognize the existence of these communities first on the grounds of humanity and human rights. We can proceed to enact restrictions on them so that we can preserve societal values.
Charlotte is a small town in North Carolina known for its seafood, and it is home to the panthers. Charlotte is one of the many cities that has an established LGBTQ community in the states. Charlotte is a friendly town that hosts a lot of fun-friendly events throughout the year hence its uniqueness. The LGBTQ community in charlotte is very vibrant and has made a lot of progress in making life safer for the members. For instance, “in 2017, ‘Time Out Youth’, a youth group that is part of charlottes LGBTQ community, took it upon themselves to build a youth shelter for young people who had been kicked out of their homes for being gay” (Robinson 2018). This step shows how LGBTQ-friendly charlotte town is.
As mentioned earlier, not all persons in society will be optimistic about community change, which means that not all will reject the change. In charlotte, the LGBTQ community has managed to lobby for supporters, and then it has created enemies. Various community stakeholders have taken their time to understand the workings of these groups and even offer their support in terms of money or just lobbying for their development. “Youths and school going minors can now get support even if they are sexually different” (Mayo 2006).
In 2017 when “time out youth” built the first support center, they received the financial back up from large donors such as the Gambrell family foundation, the Howard Levine Foundation, and the Myers Baptist church, among other supporters. LGBTQ groups in charlotte are non-profit organizations that need funding to survive. Community leaders have been seen supporting these groups, and the best example is the church that gave financial support to the non-profit youth group to build the center.
The position the church holds is outside the community. The church is a powerful religious overseer of society who acts silently to ensure people don’t go out of ethical boundaries in ways that harm society. By donating money, the church feels the plight of LGBTQ in society and wishes to help them find their place like everybody else. Churches take then silent approach to things. The affiliative style of leadership is exhibited by churches when dealing with such issues. They would like to have societal support for these minorities because people come first. The church is in a position of influencing community change via its leadership style, which is easy and non-coercive. The church has no varied motives. It just wants all people to be recognized and equal. The church acts alone, but all other institutions will reason with if not support its ideologies.
tyAn important stakeholder in this fight for legitimacy is the 'Time Out Youth” group. The group is among the oldest and largest groups that offer their support to LGBTQ youth in charlotte. The group is positioned at the center of these matters since it serves as a leader and protector of LGBTQ members. The group offers support to the gay society since its core mandate is to help “youths between 11-20 years who are struggling with stigma and societal rejection.” (Feeders 2005). The group draws its power and legitimacy from the support it gets from society and its legal registration as a non-profit making group. They only offer a helping hand, not a controlling stake.
