National Government: Limits of Free Speech and Internet Regulation (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

What are the limits of Free Speech?
Free speech in the United States is not absolute. Freedom of speech is covered by the First Amendment, which gives people the right to express themselves. Freedom of speech is a basic form of expression (Smolla, 2020). The United States law has restrictions on free speech. There are things that cannot be allowed in the country, such as obscenity, fraud, harassment, child pornography, incitement to illegal conduct, true threats, and commercial speech, which includes advertising, patent rights, and copyright (Smolla, 2020). In addition, the limits of free speech have exceptions such as incitement, counterfeit currency, and false statements of fact. The United States constitution protects political speech. The Supreme Court made the conclusion that campaign spending limits represent a violation of freedom of expression as it would have restricted the financial means to express an opinion.
How should we regulate the internet?
The regulation of the internet and privacy of data is essential as it leads to fairness and safety of the internet under one law of the country. It ensures that data is protected and keeps one from viewing harmful content (Smolla, 2020). There are various ways that the internet can be regulated. It restricts or rather controls specific information. It involves censorship of data and controlling aspects of the internet. Regulating the internet ensures there is transparency in how systems work.
Should we break up the tech companies?
In my opinion, I do not think that breaking up tech companies is a good idea. By breaking up the Big Tech, research and development will be lost. The big tech companies take part in providing funds for charity. In addition, tech companies have been at the forefront of the advancement of technology and innovation (Bhagwat, 2019). Breaking up tech companies ensures impractical market fragmentation. Tech companies will result in higher service costs if they break up.
