Similarities and Differences of the House and Senate (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

How are the House and the Senate different from one another?
There is a difference between the House and the Senate. The Senators represent their entire states, while members of the House represent individual districts. The population of the state determines the number of districts in every state. Each state has a minimum of one representative in Congress. The two have evolved into different bodies. The United States Congress, which is mostly referred to as a single entity, is made up of the combination of the House and the Senate (Andrews, 2021). The other difference between the house members and the Senate is that house members must be 25 years of age and citizens of the United States for seven years, while senators have to be at least 30 years old and citizens for nine years.
How are the House and the Senate similar to one another?
There are notable similarities between the House and the Senate. For instance, the first similarity is the process used in making a bill into law, along with the ability for anyone to come up with the idea for a bill. The House of Representatives and the Senate both have houses that focus on the impeachment process of office officials. In addition, the House and the Senate have a voting percentage of 51% on a bill to be passed (Andrews, 2021). Another notable similarity is the ability for both houses to override a veto made by the president by voting again and at least two-thirds of each House to vote for the bill. The House of Representatives and the Senate have committees whose main aim is to discuss different topics and problems facing the country.
Why is a bicameral congress a good structure to have?
Bicameral Congress is a good structure as it helps in preventing the legislative branch from possessing too much power, referred to as an intra-branch check. Bicameral legislature ensures there is equality and adequate representation of the people in a federal state. It is considered the best structure and most desirable, which avoids hasty and harsh legislation, limits democracy, and secures deliberation (Andrews, 2021). About half of the world’s government uses bicameral legislatures.
