Background of Distributed Control System
The development of the distributed control system (DCS) is one of the results of innovations in the 21st century, especially in line with the wake of automation and the development of readily accessible and easy to operate automated devices (Ge, Yang, and Han 118). Unlike the logic controllers, the distributed control system uses a suite of configuration tools when setting up the databases, system security, graphics, and control logic. Noteworthy, a distributed control system can be deployed in an integrated system, an initial installation, or as a stand-alone system. Up to the time of the development of the distribution control system, analog field devices were being connected to the control room, via the use of loops placed between devices – each connected to the control room by a “single two-wire twisted pair” (Ge, Yang, and Han 122). However, the need for efficient, cost-effective, and the production of quality products define the nature of business environments, especially electrical companies, across the world, thus increasing the need for more industrial evolution. The term distributed control system refers to a production system where the elements of a system distributed into smaller systems controlled by one or more control devices known as “controllers.” The DCS is designed to control the complex processes within an operational plant that can geographically be disseminated from a central place using networked control elements distributed throughout the system.
