SYSTEM CHANGES THAT BRING ABOUT INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION
Interdisciplinary collaboration is the process of doing things while focusing of the problem. In this process, sharing is encouraged and all tasks are tackled together. Some of the elements that must be present for successful interdisciplinary collaboration include, but not limited to; inter-professional education, strong interpersonal skills, clear awareness of responsibility and duties, deliberate and problem-focused action, and widespread support in all concerned parties.
In interdisciplinary collaboration, the parties, i.e. the patient and the client, must be fully engaged. There must be respect for and trust in the other parties’ discipline, efficient and effective means of communication, as well as offering quality care. In essence, the environment must be fostered in which all parties are committed to one course.
Some of the crucial structural changes that are required to ensure a successful interdisciplinary collaboration include qualified human resources, adequate funding, liability, appropriate regulation, the best technology in information and communication, a good management and leadership structure, and above all, careful planning and evaluation.
