Athens city was the main urban center of the famous polis or city-state which was located in Attica in Greece. During the classical period, Athens was the center for philosophy and learning, arts, Socrates’ birthplace and home to Aristotle and Plato. Many writers, politicians and philosophers of the ancient came from here which made the city to be referred to as the origin of democracy and the cradle of western civilization. Therefore, this essay discusses Athens and shows how the city is different from other political systems of the ancient world like the Roman Empire, Persians or the Spartan polis. There were similarities involved, but this work will major on the differences involved.
