This essay focuses on examining the role of legislatures in ensuring strong and stable democracies. In so doing, the essay discusses the concept of stable democracy and then proceeds to explain the role of strong legislatures on the existence of strong democracies. Using the examples of the United Kingdom and the USA legislatures, this essay holds that stronger legislatures are significant for stable democracies.
To have an in-depth comprehension of the roles of the legislature on democracy, it is worth noting that in many countries across the globe, legislatures are branches of the executive (Oleszek, 2014: 56). The primary duty of the legislature is to lawmaking. The above is an indications that the legislature is part and parcel of the ruling part of the government. However, it is worth noting that the legislature has the full mandate to check the executive powers and the actions of the executive. In this view Nicholson-Crotty and Miller (2011:352) contend that the two duties of the legislature are pivotal in getting an in-depth comprehension of the impacts of the legislature on stable democracies.
