How does lack of sleep affect our mental state?
Life is made of a blend of challenges and opportunities. The best way of coping with difficulties is having enough sleep. Having enough nap helps one deal with adversities which confront humans in their day to day endeavors. Despite the numerous benefits, most people deprive themselves of sleep since they either believe it is a waste of time or lack a connection to what it does to their health. Lack of sleep has deleterious effects on our mental health and, should be considered one of the basic needs for human survival.
Depriving oneself of sleep is dangerous and makes it difficult for a person to bounce back to healthy living. The effect reveals itself through reduced abilities to foster resilience of both mental health and emotions (Buysse, D. 2014, 13). During the day, the human brain is fed with much information which requires enough time to process and store it in the memory banks. This way, the information becomes accessible when needed. When this does not happen, the brain becomes bombarded with disorganized sets of data, making a person have negative thoughts, become emotionally vulnerable and anxious. With time, concentration reduces as well as the capacity to learn and be creative (Kerkhof &Van Dongen 2010, 105). This hampers one’s ability to perform tasks which require complex thought and logical reasoning. Sound judgment is the outcome of a properly functioning brain. Therefore, when individuals are deprived of sleep, it becomes difficult for them to make right decisions because they are unable to assess a situation and pick the right response.
