Raisin in the Sun
In A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry analyzes the idea of whether money is a source of happiness. A Raisin in the Sun narrates the story of the Young family, which is a poor African- American family that is waiting for the $ 10,000 cheque from the insurance following the death of their father. The insurance cheque creates conflict and a lot of tension in the family. Money is a significant theme in the plot, and the different characters differ on the general importance of money and diverse opinions on how they are going to use the insurance money. In the Young family, money symbolizes freedom, good social standing, and a way of overcoming sexism and racism. I argue that by using acquaintances to characterize the Young family indirectly, Hansberry reveals the worthlessness of money and materialism. Hansberry also reminds us of the sacrifices people make as a cost of freedom.
