The art depicts a Biblical story whereby Judith went into the encampment of Holofernes who was the leader of the enemy army. Judith and her people had been under siege and needed a heroic act to free them. Therefore, she feigned to want to make a deal and forge an alliance, but it was all pretense. She dressed to her best, that she impressed the general. The general let her guard down and after drinking and eating, the drunk general fell asleep handing Judith an opportunity to strike.
