Reflection on Miles Davis Music Contributions
A man was born on May 26, 1926, who would permanently alter the jazz world. The Prince of Darkness, commonly known as Miles Davis, adored music. He contributed to the creation of a brand-new kind of jazz by producing 61 studio albums, 46 compilation albums, 39 live albums, 26 box sets, 57 singles, 4 soundtrack albums, and 3 remix albums (Waters, pp. 57). Davis contributed to the current state of cool jazz. Around 1940 saw the birth of cool jazz, which takes a more relaxed approach to improvisation. Instruments that weren't jazz instruments in the traditional sense were also used in cool jazz. These instruments include the cello, the flute, and the oboe. Before his passing in 1991, Davis would go on to become well-known and win 16 Grammy Awards. But why did he love music so much, and what happened before he became well-known?
Davis was raised in a loving, caring family with two siblings. Davis' father gave him his first trumpet lesson when he was 13 years old. He performed superbly on trumpet while being coached by a tutor! His teacher placed a focus on playing without vibration (Cook, pp. 85). Later on in life, this would enable him create cool jazz.
