The Rise of Fascism and Antisemitism in Italy
Abstract
The rise of fascism in Italy occurred during world war one, and this was when Benito Mussolini and his other counterparts formed “Fasci” which was a political group that was in support of the war that was against Austria –Hungary, and Germany. Benito Mussolini introduced “fascism" in 1919 to describe what his political movement involved. The symbol of his political movement was the Roman fasces, which was a bundle of sticks tied around an ax, which symbolized the strength in unity and Rome's power. It wasn't until late 1922 that Mussolini became Italy's prime minister and established the first fascist regime. During his reign, Mussolini, for the most part, was not anti-Semitic as the Jewish population in his country was small. The Jews had fought for Italy in the First World War and joined in the march for Mussolini in Rome. In 1939, under the influence of Hitler, Benito Mussolini finally accepted to implement anti-Semitic rules. Therefore, understanding fascism and antisemitism mean how it came to be, and its features are important.
