How Did the Great Depression Influence the Films That Came Out of Hollywood During It?
It is essential to point out that the film industry, particularly Hollywood, was hugely affected by the Great Depression's impact. From displaced children to discouraged business people to failed farmers, the Great Depression in early 1929 invaded virtually all homes across the United States. While there were economic challenges during this time, nearly 70 million Americans still attended movie theatres each week. Consequently, attention to consumer's tastes was crucial in movie theatres. Notably, this paper will discuss the Great Depression's influence on the films produced by Hollywood.
Firstly, Hollywood played a significant psychological role during the Great Depression. In this regard, movies were created based on themes that would motivate the general public, providing reassurance to a demoralized nation (Cohen 1039). Notably, virtually all movies were meant to reflect a despairing mood during the early years of the Great Depression.
