In the poem “Song of Lawino” by Okot p’Bitek the ostensible character Lawino is a disconsolate wife who feels that she has been left by her husband Ocol for a more modern and educated woman. In Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Emma realizes after her marriage to Charles, the health officer, that she does not love her husband and she is very much dissatisfied CITATION Mul07 \l 1033 (Muliro).
The plot takes a set design known as tragic realism in both works. In the case of the theme of marital conflicts, both female characters Lawino and Emma Bovary have such high expectations for marriage. Lawino is uneducated but her husband Ocol has university-level education. He takes an interest in an educated, more modern woman Clementine and he takes her as a second wife soon after. In the Acoli culture, polygamy is a common practice, however, Lawino is very bitter. In the second chapter she describes Clementine thus “she is a piteous sight”.
