A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF ‘’MASTERS OF LOVE’’
Introduction
A more significant number of marriages don't work out well. They either end up in divorce or end up in separation or bitterness and dysfunctional relationships. In the article, ‘Masters of Love’’ Emily Esfahani (2014) states that there are some failed marriages in the current society. Increased cases of divorce or separation characterize this. Such cases are attributed to bitterness and dysfunctional relationships. She bases her arguments on Ty Tashiro’s book, ‘The Science of Happily Ever After. In which she believes that out of ten couples that get married, only three will maintain and flourish in their marriages. In regard, the author’s feature in “Masters of Love’’, reveals the connection between the strengths and efforts of couples in their relationship. Emily Smith’s (2014) work, is further related to John Gottman’s work, who is a psychologist at the Gottman Institute. John Gottman’s work focuses on the dissimilarities between healthy and dysfunctional marriages. Therefore his work shows a connection between Emily Smith’s works since they both carried out a study on dysfunctional relationships.
Besides, the article also narrates findings linked to marital happiness. That is Emily Smith, (2014) expresses her desire to love fully. She suggests that one can think about love in two ways: That is love can be considered as a fixed trait whereby you either have it, or you don't. To add on to this, love can be perceived as a source of strength. In which in some people, it is powerful unlike in others. However, when exercised with everyone, it can grow. Emily Smith’s further implores on John Gottman’s research, ‘Masters.’ In which she considers kindness as a muscle and a trait that every person must possess. Once they own the kindness trait, they should work on it and keep its shape. She, therefore, implies that masters are people who are calm and create an intimate environment. Such an environment then translates to affectionate behavior even when provoked.
