The Taming of the Shrew
This paper seeks to investigate the use of disguise and pretence in the play The Taming of the Shrew. It will also examine the implication of the use of pretence and disguise in real life as implicated in this play. Shakespeare introduces this play with another play. Romantic as it is as a comedy, the paly dwells principally on relationships romantically, where men and women develop an interest in each other initially and then into marriage. Hence, a minor play sets the theme of the entire play. Every character occupies and plays an explicit social position which carries definite expectations on how that individual is supposed to behave. In the induction bit of the play, Sly is portrayed as a drunk beggar who is thrown out of the bar. He is coincidentally picked up by a Lord who takes him to his house. To the surprise of the servants at the Lord’s house, the Lord orders that Sly should be treated as the master. The situation confuses Sly when he wakes up. The Lord and his servants enjoy scene created by Sly.
