The Future of Public Health in the 21st Century
The onset of the 21st century had already given us an early indication of the public health problems that nations such as the U.S. would have to encounter in the coming years. At the time, the systems and entities tasked with the protection and promotion of public health were already facing numerous challenges such as the increasing rate of obesity, contaminated environments, a relatively higher number of the uninsured, and the existing health inequalities (Institute of Medicine (U.S.) 1). At the same time, such institutions were also expected to encounter evolving risks like antimicrobial resistance and bioterrorism. At the moment, the 21st century has already shown us a fair share of how the public health was to look like, especially with the emergence of the COVID-19 that is currently spreading at an alarming rate in the United States. Amidst the current public health crisis, however, 21st century remains one of the centuries that has experienced and continues to experience scientific and technological advances of higher magnitudes (Khoury et al. 514), especially in as far as public health is concerned. With the current health crisis as a result of COVID-19, and considering the difficulties experienced in dealing with the pandemic, however, it seems that the future of public health is not a brighter one regardless of the continuing advancements in science and technology.
