The story is based on an African American story that took place immediately after the civil cold war in America. The situation was based on racial and cultural practices in the region. Slavery trade is the main agenda in the whole story. The author sarcastically brings out the true picture and situation faced by slaves in America under their masters. The scars in the story Beloved refers to the suffering Paul’s family underwent in America.
The book discusses the theme on slavery rights in details referring to Sethe who killed her daughter in an effort to save her from the slavery. Slaves had no rights and were subjected to harsh working standards. The prevailing living conditions offered murder an honorary option to all women subjected to slavery (Harold 2009, pp 40-47). . Instead of offering their children to the same suffering they are undergoing. Sethe killed her daughter in what is thought as placing her in a safe place where she cannot be captured and slaved for the rest of her life.
The book discusses the theme on community and human nature in details. When Seth’s child Paul was mentally ill and she could not provide for her family. The community offered her food hand outs’ and help were necessary. The scars in this chapter refer to the effects and repercussions that slavery has brought to her family. Denver is left to tackle with an identity crisis caused aftermath of slavery (Harold 2009, pp 60-70).
