Factors That Contribute to Obesity
Various factors can contribute to obesity. Both humans and animals may not be able to control some of these factors, including genetic makeup, age, gender, and developmental determinants. Lack of exercise and increasing the number of calories consumed are significant causes of obesity in humans. There's also an increased rate of obesity in animals which can also cause serious health problems.
Obesity can occur at any age, but as you age, inactivity and hormonal changes can contribute to obesity. The amount of muscle in the human body tends to decrease as one age. For animals, neutered middle-aged female dogs are more likely to suffer from obesity. Obesity is also common in neutered middle-aged male cats. Neutering causes risk to obesity due to an increase in food consumption and a decrease in energy levels. It's, therefore, vital to try and become physically active as you age and control the type of food that you consume (Bartges et al 327).
