Medicine and the art of healing or attending to the sick dates back many centuries and can be traced to Ancient Egyptian Civilization in 2400BC and Early Greek civilization in 430BC (McClellan and Dorn 99). During this time, medical technologies were very basic and supernaturalism was practiced along other medical practices. However, organized medical practice and service to civilians in the form of establishment of hospital is a recent practice, which can be traced to Roman Empire and majorly to Christianity. The earliest hospitals were run by catholic churches and overseen by monks and nuns, who offered medical services for free. The establishment of medical care centers across many other areas of the world can also be linked to the spread of Christianity. With time, hospitals gained a lot of support from kingdoms and nations and slowly ceased to be a preserve of the church and other religious bodies (McClellan and Dorn 98). In the modern times, hospitals have taken a more bureaucratic and administrative approach, with clear divisions of roles of both medical and administrative staff. Over time, advancements have been made in the medical field and technologies and consequently, hospitals have become more advanced and able to attend to numerous health conditions in more effective ways than early hospitals did.
With more advanced medical technologies comes the need to for more advanced medical practitioners able to effectively render services in the medical facilities. It is therefore important to doctors to actively train in new technologies and expand their skills to effectively match the expanding technological advancements in the medical field and therefore offer the best medical care to patients (McClellan and Dorn 103).
Opening a medical college requires a clear understanding of the medical field and the changes in the medical technologies therein, to offer relevant medical education to students. The most important aspects in opening a medical college include financial access to purchase equipments for learning for the students and recruitment of highly qualified medical personnel to drive the college curriculum. This will allow the college to have highly qualified medical graduates, who can fit in the highly advanced medical field.
