The Right Word: Competing Definitions of a Words / Phrases (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

here are many languages. There is the language of guns. There is the language of money. There is the language of human rights. There is the language of love. June Jordan. Language gains meaning in and through discourse communities--groups of people who share ways of thinking, questioning, and communicating. In public conversations, competing definitions of a word or phrase can divide communities or create a divide within a community. Because words have blurred edges, their meanings are negotiable and depend largely upon context. Recently, the political community was fractured by the use of “anchor baby,” while religious, political, social and legal communities have long challenged each other’s right to define “marriage.” Choose a word or phrase that is central to a public conversation. Identify the context for the word or phrase and defend one definition’s merits and/or one community’s authority.

The Right Word
These words and expressions are designed for making an impression that a definite or meaningful statement has been achieved when only a dubious claim has been spoken, allowing the exact meaning to be repudiated if the statement is challenged. The declaration being made can denote meaning from these words. Some of these words may also have the outcome of moderating the force of a possibly laden or otherwise contentious statement through some form of understatement.
The first statement of literature that I will start by looking at is, “at this site there is a new airstrip. Its lengthiest airstrip is a thousand feet." This first statement defines something recognizable with a pronounced degree of inevitability. The survey on the aircraft's location was identified with accuracy and its camera duplicated nearly just, what were there (Ransom’s 196). Here is the second statement, "It is nearly certainly a military airstrip”. This second statement is an approximation. It defines something, which is recognizable regarding the human understanding but not quite known by the person who is speaking about it. Numerous military planes are parked in mutated hardstands hence a sound proof to withstanding his ruling The sustenance area has all the features of related known military fixings. This evidence is indirect as conclusive as it is. It cannot validate a flat allegation that this is an army airstrip.
The third statement, "The landscape is such that the Spaces could easily extend the airstrips, or else advance the amenities, and include this field in their structure of calculated staging centers. It is likely that they will." Alternatively, more boldly, "It would be rational for them to do this and sooner or later they possibly will”. This statement is another approximation, which is prepared virtually without any proof direct or unintended. It may approximate something that no one alive can recognize. For the Blanks may not yet have come to a decision whether to extend the airstrips and construct up the base. In addition, the rationality of the condition as it looks to the person allows him to unveil himself into the area of the incomprehensible and make this approximation. He can use likely to show that airstrip extension is neither certain nor unmanageable, or else use probably to elect more quite a degree of probability.
Commonly, the most significant channels of the literature of substantive intelligence comprise far more statements of the estimative types two and three than of the factual type one. The reason for this is that several of the things you most desire to recognize about the other man are the secrets of state he guards most enviously. To the extent his security measures work, to that point your awareness must be faulty and your statements consequently practiced by designators of your uncertainty. Simple discretion needs the skilled in any type-three statement to show a decent discretion before the inexplicable (George 284).
Distress over these qualifiers is most typical of that part of the intelligence production business identified as estimates. This is no obscure minor section; it covers nearly every angle of all intelligence research work, from the short assessments or remarks of a reports officer to the full-dress research study of the political or economic analyst. Essentially all substantive intelligence people frequently make estimates. The comments that follow are mostly spoken to all these people and their readers, but mainly they are addressed to that specific institution of the approximating business known as the National Intelligence Estimate and its audience.
The National Intelligence Estimate is taking into account the high level of its originators, producers, and consumers should be the community's best strength to deal with the pertinent proof inventively and sensibly. It should set forth the community's outcomes in such a way as to make clear to the reader what definite knowledge is and what is the rational conclusion, and the varying degrees of conviction lie behind each key statement. Preferably, once the community has fabricated...
