First part: Are we still in the Conservative era?
Politics change from time to time. The events occurring after 1932 show a significant change in US leadership and politics. Initially, many people could support the government in a position with minimal criticism. At the time, the Republican Party was more popular than the Democratic, especially after the 1920 election. Republicans elected into office Warren Harding, whom Democrats labelled as lazy, weak and incompetent. Getting into office with 61% of the popular vote shows the popularity and mighty of the Republican Party. The supporters hailed his leadership because of minimal restrictions in the business and economic environment in general.
Fast forward to 1932; Democratic numbers grew because the sitting government failed to control the country economically. The Great Depression, as a result of poor economic decisions, propelled the Democratic Party to victory. Its candidate Franklin Roosevelt brought the long Republican Party dominance to an end (Conlin 670). It was an end of an era for conservatism since people realized they needed transformation to salvage the country economically. Liberal minds ganged up and spread the agenda across the country, weakening the ruling Republican party. Roosevelt’s election saw the birth of the New Deal. It was series of plans to restore and rejuvenate the country’s economy from the Great Depression effects. Liberalism continued in later years with the series of events around the Civil Rights Movement and subsequent elections. Conservatism lost its place to liberalism after the Great Depression.
Liberalism rules supreme considering the change of leadership over time. Voters turned against the ruling party and leaders in past election periods after recognizing their weakness. In today’s world, people are more liberal since they closely monitor the government than in the past. We are past the conservative era especially considering criticism of the previous governments. Unlike the 1920s when the Republican-dominated the country, currently, the government is open to criticism upon sidelining citizens’ interests. Recent protests over mass shootings, racism, job creation and security form enough reasons to term Americans as liberals. There is more scrutiny of the government than in the past.
Second part: Liberalism saved the US
Scrutiny on the government mended ways of living and practices in the US. The role of activists and liberals played a critical role in bringing into the limelight socially unacceptable vices in US societies. Among notable contributions of liberalism include women empowerment rights in the 1960s, racial desegregation and the rise of the religious right (Conlin 820). Conservative followers sided with the government in every action, thereby offering less opposition to any government action. It was responsible for the economic collapse resulting in the Great Depression. Racial discrimination and slavery also trace their roots into conservatives. Liberalism put the government on toes and helped shape the country economically, end racism and discrimination rampant after 1932.
Liberals ensured the federal government guaranteed and respected African American civil rights. They faced stiff opposition from Conservatives who argued that the Great Society policies would promote racial equality. While the enactment of some rules protected the Blacks against racism
