Western Civilization: From Ancient to Early Modern Times
Europe was a region in turmoil during the late middle ages. The continent suffered from both plague and war. The survivors of these challenges wanted to celebrate life and the human spirit. First, the people began to question middle age institutions that were unable to prevent suffering from the plague and war. The most dominant institution at the time was the church. People questioned the church because it taught Christians how to endure suffering on earth while awaiting reward in a heavenly afterlife. Leading this new form of thinking were artists and writers. They began to express this new spirit through their work. These men and women would eventually change how the Europeans viewed themselves and the world to usher in the modern age defined by the individual.
Between the 12th and 15th century, Europe experienced an explosion in creativity.
