Modern Paris
Old Paris Versus New Paris
Old Paris, as described in the article, was not as orderly as the new one. First and foremost, it was occupied by the middle working class. However, the working class had a tendency of revolting and toppling existing governments whenever times got tough. To solve this problem, Napoleon came up with the plan of moving the working class out of the city and replacing them with the noblemen who would occupy the city’s central parts. Before the reconstruction, Paris was a medieval city. It was made up of random beautiful buildings that were designed differently. There was no uniformity. The streets were also not straight. Instead, they meandered in between buildings sometimes ending up in dark alleys. Haussmann, a man appointed by Napoleon to reconstruct the city, began constructing a new drainage and clean water system that was not there before.
