The Spanish American War
Even before the war between Spanish and the United States of America (USA), the latter had already revealed its interest in investing in Cuba. President Grover Cleveland affirmed that the trade between Cuba and the USA amounted to approximately $64,000,000 in 1889 and increased to $103,000,000 in 1893 (Zinn). For that reason alone, the USA would not have allowed the Spanish to destroy its investments on the island, and that is the reason why it intervened in the revolt between Cuba and Spain. Cubans were excused from the negotiations with the USA authorities after the Spanish American War since their contributions during the tussle were minimal.
The primary assumption for the exclusion of Cuba in the negotiations was that its military did not play a significant role in redeeming the country. As such, Cubans recognized and accepted to be controlled by the American army. Specifically, the Platt Amendment became incorporated in the Cuban Constitution in 1901. Indeed, it allowed the USA to intervene in its internal affairs by safeguarding Cubans' independence, maintaining the government, and protecting people's lives and their properties (Zinn). In other words, the USA acted as the representative of Cubans, which is why they were excused from the negotiations during and after the war.
