Introduction
In the recent past, many states have brought forward bills that seek to end death penalty due to high legal costs associated with it. National records confirm that death penalty is continuously getting imposed less frequently. Over the years, it has become evident that the costs involved in accomplishing death penalty have become higher and higher. Such a case has been observed in Oregon and Washington where the costs of death penalty have increased significantly. It has not been easy to understand the reasons for the increased level of costs but some of the reasons are attributed to changes in public opinion and the existing laws of the land that impact on the legal practice and costs of the court cases. It is without doubt that the death penalty costs are getting unnecessarily higher compared to handing the offenders a life imprisonment.
One of the most talked about misconception about death penalty is that it saves money based on the argument that the executed defendants are no longer taken care of financially by the state. However, this can only be true if the costs of the death penalty
