Differences between Herzberg’s and Maslow’s theories
Motivation implies a process of encouraging workers to adopt different strategies to achieve their desired objectives. In other words, it stimulates a person to perform tasks fast, as expected by the management. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Herzberg’s two-factor model are the two popular and reputable motivational theories, but each of these models has own distinctions with regard to the motivation of employees.
Maslow’s and Herzberg’s theories have unique peculiarities. According to Shaughnessy et al., Maslow’s model can be regarded as a general motivational approach since it focuses on the urge to satisfy human wants (5). The theory has five levels of needs consisting of psychological, safety, love, self-esteem, and self-actualization. In contrast, Herzberg’s model postulates that the existing factors within an organization contribute towards employee satisfaction or dissatisfaction (Bexheti and Agron 378). The organizational factors include recognition and achievement, which play a vital role in the motivation of workers. Furthermore, Maslow’s theory classifies needs as deficiency and growth, while Herzberg’s model categorizes human wants as hygiene and motivation. Despite the differences, the two theories aim at motivating employees and improving their work conditions.
