Some of the ideologies that the founding fathers' hand in mind have fallen short in recognizing "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." As stated in the united states declaration of independence.
The pursuit of liberty when it comes to political independence has been the cornerstone for states enforcing different rules on who can vote in a presidential election CITATION Col18 \l 1033 (Lynch). Political independence has allowed states to pass and enforce their own laws in favor of the largest demographic in that state. Often these laws alienate minorities in these states denying them the pleasure of pursuing happiness.
The American constitution has undergone several amendments to provide inclusivity to demographics that had been previously been marginalized in the electoral process. According to congress which under Article one, section four reserves the right to make or alter electoral regulations, for someone to be eligible to a participant as a voter in a presidential election, one must be 18 years old, and united states citizen. On the other hand, the constitution also allows individual states to have their own standards and requirements for one to eligible as a voter. While one state allows convicts to participant in elections, others do not allow those with criminal records to participate in elections.
