Understanding the Stereotype: Women as Shallow and Materialistic (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

Without a doubt, critics are correct in maintaining that shows, such as The Real Housewives of New Jersey, have set women back by portraying them as materialistic and shallow. As a supporter of the critics, I have to say that the media is wrongly portraying women as people who do not understand how to maintain good relationships and families. In fact, such shows portray women as individuals who cannot carry out basic chores in the house and kitchen. In wrongly portraying women as materialistic and shallow in thinking, reality shows pull women back and pile shameful stereotypes on the female gender.

For starters, media and reality shows have the tendency of focusing on one aspect, which women struggle with and make a big issue out of it. Evidence is clearly illustrated in the three-part series of the jail-time life Teresa Giudice, an actress on The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Teresa Giudice is portrayed as a woman who is shallow in thinking and acting. In the show, Giudice is recognized for her temper tantrums and making decisions based on anger. The show even follows up on real life of the actress, exposing how she served 11 months at Danbury Connecticut federal correctional center for fraud charges (Harmes, Harmes and Harmes 447). The sad part is that the show does not pay much attention on the good behavior, which saw the actress being released from prison in December 2015.
