Research Context
Tanner Campbell Professor Tucker ENGL COMP 2 February 16, 2022, Do Video Games Make You Smarter? We have always come across stereotypes concerning video games from almost everyone. When we discover or hear about our siblings, friend, or close acquaintances staying up all night playing the video game, that seems to us pointless. With the opinions of someone who has never bothered to attempt playing video games in their lives, it may seem like the game does not apply much of an IQ requirement either. To the players of this game, as nagging and fun making we might be about the spending much time concentrating and playing this game, they always come home full of smiles on their faces telling us how satisfied they are from playing the game and how smart they feel from engaging their time playing the online video game. When I came across the topic of this class that it was, in fact, 'Video Games,' I thought it could be fun. So- do video games make you smarter or affect cognitive learning? My sources provide an excellent understanding of the details and the 'how?' of my specific research question/topic. They help me frame and explain the many different benefits associated with video games. They can tell this information based on studies and surveys and gather their research on the topic. This has given me the tools to read and explore and learn more about the issue and write this now. Surprisingly, all my sources are all very intertwined with one another and are all on the same page. I was thankful that none of my sources went against each other. I would say that the basis of my sources is 'logos' with a touch of 'ethos' and 'pathos.' I say this statement because there is a lot of logic and reason within all the articles I found. For example, all my sources talk about how video games make you smarter. They give skill sets that video games provide you with and all the benefits they must, and all the logic and reason behind those. Let us get into some of these things I am talking about. For example, all three of my sources (that will be listed below) list:
The strategy has a benefit that stems from playing video games. How may you ask? Previous studies have indicated that the experience gained from playing online games is likely to improve cognitive development to a greater sense of being able to contrast, improve eye-to-hand coordination, and develop the memory to become superior in all aspects. This development on a person enhances their cognitive power to learn how to coordinate different activities at different times by incorporating their hands, brain, and eyes to perform those tasks at other times apart from game playing.
Another benefit to adding to the topic of 'intelligence' is problem-solving. The trial-and-error approach practices this skill. Video games boost your confidence in making decisions and problem-solving in the real world. The skills you obtain from playing are positively related to success- it allows you to try different methods and approaches. Wise decision-making in life also enables individuals to make sound life judgments that can improve their lifestyles or living standards by discovering various ways of survival instincts.
Another attribute that has been proven from video games is the fact that it increases the brain's gray matter. This is done by winning and developing social skills with former gamer friends. Also, 3D video games engage the hippocampus and provide stimulation. Lastly, it increases functional activity. Brain development is crucial to anyone in this life, more so in children who are still at the development stage. The games will help widen a person's memory to grasp and recognize a lot of activities and events unfolding around them at any time in life.
Critical Analysis
The sources I have gathered, however, do list some ethos and pathos. For example, concerning previous studies I have put into use to perform my analysis, nearly 90% of children aged between 10–18-year-old engage in video games once or twice in one month, and 43% of them play or participates in video games every day or at least spend time every day playing a video game. 0.39 percent of individuals out of 4,523 surveyed listed playing video games as their number activity on weekdays, and only 0.02 percent listed as their second activity on weekdays. On weekends, however, 0.74 percent of individuals were listed as their number one activity and 0.05 as their second activity. Another chart was made that incorporated diverse kinds of video games such as educational, violent, or unproductive. The basis of these results was, of course, the more educational video games had better effects, and the violent not as much- however, the so-called "violent" one's video games such as Call of Duty or Fortnite, include more opportunities for teamwork, social skills, and problem-solving. There is also a little bit of ethos in there, I mean, in the big scheme of things feeling emotionally intelligent is an emotion, and just like the sources say, the bonds you build (that teamwork) with people, winning with your team (satisfactory feeling), these are all emotions that you feel when playing video games.
With that being said- there is such a thing as overplaying. Engagement in too much video gaming has been found to accompany itself with some positive emotional and social relationships during the playing time of these games. In contrast, too much and overindulgence in these games has been associated with maladaptive coping strategies, harmful and stressful emotions, poor attitudes, reduced self-esteem, feeling of loneliness, reduction in academic prowess, and performance of an individual overall, as I've said and what made me want to dig into this topic further. There is a definite stereotype surrounding video games and the people who play them.
Therefore, I wanted to dig into my two sources about this topic and seek further information. So, from at least what I gathered, the consensus is that video games are beneficial in many ways and, in fact, in multiple ways, make you smarter! Video games can be an entrance to the learning world and the discovery of entertainment. They give you various attributes to use in your everyday life and equip you with skills. As far as my future action in writing papers goes, I would say I would do everything pretty much the same. I enjoyed my topic- because I picked something that I was curious about, given all the stereotyping about video games and how much my boyfriend plays them. So I wanted to educate myself so that I can therefore inform others too if they are curious. Luckily and fortunately for me, the sources that I picked, luckily and fortunately for me, went right along with my topic/ research question and answered all of my questions and more. They provided me with charts, data, and lots of knowledge.
Testing the Impact of Online Gaming on Psychological Wellbeing and the Roles of Play Motivations and Problematic Use.
A recent meta-analysis published study (Uttal et al., 2013) came to a common conclusion that the improvement of spatial skills which are acquired from engaging in online gameplay the video game called the shooter can be proportionally compared to the effects of the higher learning institution courses aimed at improving these same skills. The study also shows that spatial skills learning can be done in
