Ron arranged with Vermon Thompson, a professor and assistant dean at Medill School of Journalism, to be Liu Zongren’s academic advisor during Christmas in Chicago. Thompson created a study plan that allowed Lou to report to him once a week and to read, audit daily courses and get acquainted with the new environment independently. Due to his age, Lou felt awkward in the new setting, spoke poor English and was the only Chinese in the classroom.
