Ron arranged with Vermon Thompson, a professor and assistant dean at Medill School of Journalism, to be Liu Zongren’s academic advisor during Christmas in Chicago. Thompson created a study plan that allowed Lou to report to him once a week and to read, audit daily courses and get acquainted with the new environment independently. Due to his age, Lou felt awkward in the new setting, spoke poor English and was the only Chinese in the classroom. Thompson gave him loads of books about American News media even though they had little connection to his work back in China ant both the economic and political systems were so different. Liu wanted to meet and talk with people, maybe make new friends, understand American society and culture, and enhance his command of English, despite the tasks given. At Professor Thompson’s office, Lou met his first American friend, Victor Valle. He was invited to his house by Victor, where he met Mary, his wife, who had a Chinese grandfather.
