Ethical and legal aspect of Nursing
Introduction
On matters related to ethical and legal aspect of nursing, they are needed to ascertain the rights of a patient in the healthcare sector are being respected in the right perspective (Catalano, 2015). Significantly, this paper enumerates in detail on examples that are associated with ethics and legal entity in healthcare/nursing.
Standards of Care
Once in one of local clinics I witnessed my brother who had gotten into an accident and brought to the clinic for first aid. When we arrived at the clinic, the nurses didn't seem to notice my brother despite the fact that he was bleeding profusely. We tried to explain to the nurses in attendance, but it was like they didn't care because it was on a Friday and most of them were almost through with their shift. Basically, we were told to wait for the nurses who were supposed to come in for the next shift, which meant we were to wait for another thirty minutes. Apparently, the incident is an example of how the Standards of Care were not observed to the latter. I believe that as a student, the Standards of Care were not put into practice because we had to wait for the next shift which led to my brother passing out eventually before being treated. From my point of view, the nurses who were still on duty could have at least initiated first aid, so as to help my brother who was the patient evade from passing out due to loss of blood.
Negligence
Catalano (2015), indicates that negligence is often looked at as the breach of duty of care that leads to loss to the person owed. Negligence can also be defined as the carelessness or causing an individual to be at risk of being hurt. An example is nurse who is tasked with the objective of feeding a patient who is unable to feed ends up forgetting to do her task. The out of the event may lead to the death of the patient; hence, such an act is looked at as negligence.
Malpractice
According to Catalano (2015), malpractice is the failure of a professional individual like a nurse to offer proper service via reprehensible negligence, especially when loss follows. An example is when a nurse fails to report to the doctor in cases where a patient has fallen from his or her bed or even wheelchair while being moved around the hospital surrounding.
