Abstract
Prediabetes is the intermediate state of hyperglycaemia with bold glucose parameters that are above normal but below the diabetes threshold. The WHO uses the parameters of fasting plasma glucose between 6.1-6.9 mmol/L to define prediabetes. People with prediabetes have an increased risk of developing diabetes if no interventions are made. It is estimated that 40% of people with prediabetes develop diabetes in a period of 5 years. This has created the need for urgent national guidelines and diabetes prevention programs among people with prediabetes. However, the effectiveness of these programs is yet to be established following their recent inception and implementation. This PICOT research assesses clients with prediabetes to understand how does participating in the National Diabetes Prevention Program, compared with not participating in the National Diabetes Prevention Program, prevent or delay the type 2 diabetes, in one-year period.
The study applied a prospective research design to identify 40 participants to participate in the study. 20 participants were in the national diabetes prevention program while the other 20 for the past one and reported at least one lifestyle modification to prevent type 2 diabetes after attending group education forums organized by the healthcare provider. The other 10 were not enrolled to such a program. The glycaemic index over the year was developed for the two cohorts with monthly readings being recorded and compared for the entire period. The findings revealed that the national diabetes prevention program reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes through helpful changes in diet and physical activity. Therefore, it is recommended that patients with prediabetes should be enrolled to the national diabetes prevention program to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes and the associated costs.
