Standard Delivery Methods of Vast Infrastructure Projects
Introduction
The management of large infrastructure projects (LIPs) involves four principal phases namely program, design, procurement, and production. The initiation and completion of LIPs follows a delivery system, which organizations employ for organizing and financing designs, construction, operation, and, maintenance activities and expedites a viable delivery system (Yun et al. 2016). The three dominant delivery methods include design-bid-build (DBB), design and build (DB), and construction management (CM). It is worth noting that no delivery method is appropriate for all projects. Preferably, selection of the delivery technique depends on multifaceted factors and different circumstances (Tao, Shen, & Qian 2017). The productivity and the rate of innovation of the massive infrastructure market are contingent on the type of delivery method. This paper examines the standard ways of managing large infrastructure projects (McWhirt, Shane, & Strong 2011).
Infrastructural development is a leading underpinning for the economic health of countries around the world. Turner and Simister (2011) note that it sets the pace for economic growth and development as well as improving productivity. In the recent decades, the scale of demand for large infrastructure projects has grown (Lena & Hans 2014). As such, the need to improve efficiency and productivity is a leading concern in the construction industry (Walker, Davis, & Stevenson 2017). Also, the continued growth of information mobility and the implementation of lean practices in the industry force actors to adopt the best delivery systems for managing large infrastructure projects (Miller et al. 2000). The most suitable methods of managing LIPs are Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and Construction Management. A detailed overview of each delivery system follows in the section that follows.
