Should the Termination of a Fetus be Considered Murder?
The termination of a fetus is not murder. First, abortion gives women with complicated pregnancies options. Second, abortion reduces maternal injuries and deaths. Finally, abortion reduces welfare costs to taxpayers.
Complicated Pregnancies
Americans tend to believe that pregnancy comes with complications. When it to the topic of abortion most of abortion, most of us readily agree that there is always a chance of complications. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of who is at risk? While some are convinced that these complications are genetic, others believe that having a complicated pregnancy is normal and could happen to anyone. According to Reinhard (2013) “It would be cruel to force women to carry fetuses with fatal congenital disabilities to term. Even in the case of nonfatal conditions, such as Down syndrome, parents may be unable to care for a severely disabled child”. (Should Abortion be Legal, pro 8). Basically, Reinhard is saying that a healthy baby is not always guaranteed. Pregnancy comes with a lot of complications. These complications can either be a harm to the mother or the fetus. For instance, an ectopic pregnancy which is pregnancy growing outside of the uterus can lead to the death of the mother it is not terminated. A fetus can also develop what is called anencephaly, in which a large part of the skull and brain is missing.
Abortion Reduces Maternal Injuries and Death
It is often said that the termination of a fetus causes maternal injuries and death. In the discussion of abortion, a controversial issue has been whether abortion causes maternal injuries or not. On the one hand, some argue that abortion is murder. On the other hand, some people oppose that fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when abortions are performed. Others even believe that abortion eliminates the potential societal contributions of a future human being. My view is that unprofessionally done abortion reduces maternal injuries and death. According to Mishell “before abortion was legalized women would frequently try to induce abortions by using coat hangers, knitting needles, or radiator flush, or by going to unsafe "back-alley" abortionists." (Should Abortion be Legal, pro 5).Patt Morrison (2014) states that "In 1972, there were 39 maternal deaths from illegal abortions. By 1976, after Roe v. Wade had legalized abortion nationwide, this number dropped to two”. In other words, Mishell and Morrison believe that women who intend to abort their unwanted pregnancies unprofessionally end up putting their life at risk. Legalization of abortion will reduce maternal injuries which means abortion done professionally.
Abortion Reduces Welfare Cost to Tax Payers.
Americans today tend to believe that abortion reduces welfare cost to taxpayers. When it comes to the topic of abortion, most people will readily agree that abortion cost less than welfare. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of which is more expensive?. While some are convinced that allowing abortion conflicts with the unalienable right to life recognized by the founders of the United States, others believe that abortion may lead to future medical problems for the mother. According to Convert (2013) “The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan federal agency, evaluated a proposed anti-abortion bill that would ban all abortions nationwide after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and found that the resulting additional births would increase the federal deficit by $225 million over nine years, due to the increased need for Medicaid coverage. Also, since many women seeking late-term abortions are economically disadvantaged, their children are likely to require welfare assistance”(Should Abortion be Legal, pro 12). Converts point is that low-income women who are denied abortion are likely to live in poverty and would have to depend on the government for assistance as a result taxes are being increased.
Women Have Right to Choice
Women have the moral right to decide on what to do with their bodies, and this includes whether to have an abortion or not. It is reported that the right to abortion is essential for individual women to achieve their full potential, for it allows women to continue with their goals such as to further their studies, excel in their careers, and also to organize themselves first before starting a family.
