Prenatal care provided promptly can significantly lower the high death rate suffered by children under one year of age. This is because the child receives excellent care beginning in the first trimester, and by the time the mother is in the third trimester, any complications are identified and dealt with. The best supplements for the baby's health during the pregnancy can also be given to the mother. According to data on child mortality, most African American mothers skip prenatal care appointments in the first trimester of their pregnancies. In the regular course of things, they attend hospitals during labor, however, others decide to deliver at home.
