The healthcare delivery system of the united states has advanced rather contrarily from that of the health care delivery system in Europe. The United States healthcare delivery system owes its uniqueness to the American values, political, social, and economic backgrounds. Various forces have been instrumental in creating the United health care systems since the pre-industrial era, 1798 to date. The control of the American healthcare delivery system continues to shift over the years due to its founding principles. The social, economic, and political context is not static and has led to the dynamism in the United States healthcare delivery system. However, values and beliefs remain static for quite long periods.
The evolution of control of the United States healthcare services is traced through three major historical eras, each defining a major change in the delivery of the healthcare system. The pre-industrial era is the first phase existing between the 18th and 19th centuries. The post-industrial era's second phase begins in the late 19th century  (Shi & Singh, 2013). The third phase is the corporate era, noticeable by the development of managed care, information revolution, organization integration/interoperability, and globalization arning, & Learnin, 2021). During these eras, various major changes have shaped the evolution of healthcare delivery from the traditional healthcare provision to the complex technologically advanced care system that exists today.
The pre-industrial era was marked by various healthcare delivery practices that steered the sector towards the current evolution. The medical training, practice, and institution had several antecedent landmarks that were famous of this era. Medical training, until 1870, was received via an individual apprenticeship with a practising physician rather than a training education institution Division, 2021). The apprenticeship type of training was poor as many of the practising physicians were, then, poorly trained. Apprenticeship training was facilitated by a very small number of medical schools that could not accommodate the vast majority of medical students.
The pre-industrial era of healthcare provision was also characterized by payment of medical bills settled from personal funds and paid directly to the physicians. The free market formed the major platform of healthcare delivery during this era. This (free market as a platform for healthcare delivery) was largely due to the few hospitals that were only located in big cities  (Digital Communications Division, 2021). Since then, the government and the financing of the healthcare system and service delivery has erupted to date  (Sheikhy-Chaman, 2020). The United States government, through its Department of Human and Health Services, has strived to ensure the availability of quality healthcare service to its financially challenged citizens.
