My experience in a healthcare setting exposed me to situations of direct vulnerabilities regarding information handling. The information could easily be exposed, beating the very requirements of HIPAA. The possible gaps were in allowing the patients to access their health information within the allowed timescale and inadequate ePHI access controls. The vulnerabilities created gaps of noncompliance with HIPAA (HIPAA Journal, 2021). In the health organization, the patients have the right to access their information timely. That helps verify the information and confirm it is accurate and adequately protected. In the second example, the gaps could cause noncompliance because anybody could easily access the data systems and access patient information. That implies unauthorized parties could retrieve the information that should be confidential.
The vulnerabilities are significant as they expose protected information to parties that should not have access to it. In the first example, the exposure to protected data is that the patient could fail to obtain relevant copies of their information (HHS.gov, n.d.). The reason for serving them with the replicas is to ensure they confirm if the data has been entered correctly and if there are any errors to address. The HIPAA requires that it be done within 30 days. However, during the experience, the process could end the last day before patients are served with their information (HIPAA Journal, 2021). In the next case, the computers and other information systems could be shared. The vulnerabilit
