Introduction
North America is facing a drug crisis that is described as the opioid pandemic which has hit the country in the last two decades. The issue is a significant public health concern, given that many Americans die due to drug abuse related issues. Drug overdose has been the cause of many injury-related deaths in the country leading to a reduced life expectancy in people from diverse demographic groups. Many national and state health policies seek to address this pandemic by designing strategies to combat the misuse of drugs. Policies also target at resolving social and economic issues related to the opioid crisis. The strategies towards combating the opioid pandemic are promising although they have not yielded sufficient results in the fight against opioids abuse. Many of the employed strategies seek to reduce the risk of overdosing and unnecessary prescription of opioid drugs. However, there is a need to enact policies that are designed to address the key issues that drive the development of the opioid pandemic.
