Research Exercise: PICOT Design
Proposed research question: Does provision of information about Diabetes symptoms and the various ways to handle extreme reactions to adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) daily as opposed to offering the standard care promote treatment adherence among the teenagers?
List your Independent and Dependent (outcome) variables as well as any other terms in your Research Question that must be defined.
1 Independent variables: Provision of information about symptoms and the ways to handle extreme reactions, and provision of standard T1D care
2 Dependent or outcome variable: Increased treatment adherence
3 Intervening and/or confounding variables: Peer pressure from other teenagers and family support
4 Additional terms that must be defined: Standard T1D care
Conceptually and operationally define each term listed in a, b & d above. Give the conceptual definition first, followed by the operational definition for the independent and dependent variables.
Conceptual Definition:
* Provision of information about symptoms: Providing patients with T1D symptoms information includes reminding them about issues that show a reduction of insulin within the body. The symptoms comprise increased thirst, frequent urination, bed-wetting, extreme hunger, unintended weight loss, irritability and mood fluctuations, fatigue, weakness, and blurred vision.
* The best way to handle extreme reactions: Extreme reactions among people with T1D occur when sugar levels become too low. The intervention aims at providing patients with enough information on how to detect hypoglycemia reactions and the best response towards each episode.
* Provision of standard T1D care: Monthly clinics where patients’ vitals are monitored and appropriate medication offered.
* Treatment Adherence: The rate at which a person’s behavior conforms to the medical and health advice (Gandhi et al., 2015).
