PICOT Question and Evidence-Based Approach
Applying evidence-based approaches to clinical issues has become a norm in the healthcare industry. The practice allows practitioners to utilize available data that is backed up by expert opinions, experience, and well-researched matters to solve healthcare problems. In the current paper, the researcher will utilize an evidence-based approach to determine the effectiveness of using self-management education programs to enhance the quality of life for patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a debilitating illness affecting 10 percent of the global population (Murray et al., 2017). Moreover, type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes affecting people. According to Rasoul et al. (2019), type 2 diabetes constitutes 90% of all diabetes affecting individuals. The disease has devastating effects on the economy of a region because it reduces the capacity of people to productively contribute to the national income (Kelly et al., 2018). The prevalence of the disease and the influence it has on the general health of a population and the country’s economic stability justify the need for effective interventions to manage the illness.
The PICOT question for the current study is, does the use of web-based self-management education programs as compared to offering normal care improve the quality of life for patients living with type 2 diabetes in a period of 12 months? The researcher will assess the effectiveness of web-based and mobile technologies in equipping patients with self-management skills that help in reducing adverse effects associated with type 2 diabetes. The researcher chose the topic because poor management of type 2 diabetes can lead to further complications including cardiovascular problems, nerve damage, amputations, and psychological problems. As such, finding a reliable approach that can be applied to improve the pharmacological treatment of the disease can reduce the burden of disease among the patients and ensure that people with type 2 diabetes live a close to normal life. Self-management programs reduce the rate of hospitalization for patients which diminishes the cost of care for individuals and the healthcare industry.
